Studio Donegal – Soft Donegal

(3 customer reviews)

Soft Donegal is a fantastically soft worsted weight tweed made from 100% merino wool. It comes in a beautiful range of speckled colourways which are easy to combine together to create beautiful pieces of stranded knitting. This yarn is woollen spun and so very lofty and warm. Perfect for those thick cardigans and jumpers that will keep you snug as a bug during the winter months.

Studio Donegal is based in Kilcar, a town located in the picturesque county of Donegal, Republic of Ireland. Kilcar has a long-standing tradition of hand-weaving and woollen textiles dating as far back as the late 1700’s. In the early 1970s commercial hand-weaving completely ceased giving place to the more profitable power looms. In the late 1970’s Studio Donegal was founded to revive and to preserve the craft. Today Studio Donegal is one of the last remaining mills specialising in the production of hand-woven clothes, garments and yarns.

A really lovely yarn! A pleasure to knit with – I am currently combining this with 2 very different yarns, on 8mm needles, to make a scarf. I was really surprised to see this brand because I assumed that all the Donegal Tweed was under the Debbie Bliss brand. I learned to crochet arcade stitch through Wool and the Gang’s YouTube channel. I used a 6mm needle to make a laptop cover – the resulting texture and bulk were superb. I only bought 2 hanks at the lovely Yak store, but hope to acquire more as my stash reduces :-).

      Hi Jude,
Glad you like Soft Donegal! You right it works really well with texture as it has a lot of body and structure. We stock another yarn by Studio Donegal, Darnie, which is a 4ply version of the Soft Donegal made from 100% lambswool. It’s lovely to work with and perfect if you’re looking to make something lighter.

love this wool so much; it’s so soft and warm and i just love the colours! i’ve made hats for my husband and jumpers for my now two year old. mainly i just sponge the jumpers clean but when they need it, i wash them on the wool cycle in my machine and dry them in the sun or on the radiator in the winter (shock horror! ) and they still look really good. i’d recommend this wool for any double knitting project.

    many thanks

Worsted weight are heavier than DK but lighter than Aran. Worsted weight yarn usually have a gauge of around 17-20 sts per 4″ / 10 cm using 4.5-5.00 mm needles.
