Intersection socks

Since January we’ve welcomed a new member into our team. You may have already met Felicity if you come here on weekends, today she’ll be chatting about her latest project the Intersections Socks by Marceline Smith!

Finally I have completed my Intersections socks from 52 Weeks Of Socks, this pair have been on my needles for a while, as they constantly were getting forgotten about in project bags between knitting them in lectures, on the bus or at knit night!.

The yarn is from the La Bien Aimée and Rosa Pomar Mondim collaboration in shade “Driftwood Graffiti”. This sock yarn is different from your typical 4 ply sock as it is 100% Portuguese wool, no nylon, non-super wash and un-bleached! its base of warm grey makes the rusty reds, oranges and browns take the spotlight. Although it has a rustic feeling while knitting I have found after blocking and wearing they have softened up beautifully, plus it feels good to be working without any synthetic fibres.

This pattern by Marceline Smith was really fun to knit! Although repetitive the cables were satisfying and morish and being able to cable without a cable needle was a big bonus. Because of the colour variation and speckles the cables are sometimes lost, however I don’t mind this as I think it adds to the business of the socks. In a plain yarn the cables would be able to shine more! This pattern is worked from toe up, a technique I hadn’t used before so I was excited to learn a new heel construction as well as being able to do a stretchy bind off at the end of the ribbing. Something I struggle with on cuff-down socks.

My only mistake in this pair is the heels. One looks similar to a regular heel flap and gusset and the other resembles a short row heel turn and I can’t tell which one I prefer.  Although luckily they both fit great. I had only realised this mistake when I had almost finished the second sock so I felt it wasn’t worth ripping back to make them match. I see it as a bit of an experiment to see which wears better. I’m intrigued to see how soon it will be before these socks will need darning or mending as there is no nylon for durability as well as no reinforcement in the heels!

Next on my to-knit list is the Amber socks by Veera Välimäki. I’m hoping to hold a strand of Mondim with a strand of mohair, I am curious to see if this mutes the self-striping/ speckled look of the yarn for a softer look as well as providing some extra strength and durability to the fabric. Now to pick from the colour ways of Mondim we have in the shop!
