When I knew the shop was on it’s way I thought it would be a great idea to get something really unique for the shop to celebrate. The Uncommon Thread is one of my favourite yarn companies, they create the most amazing colourways know to man and I feel an extra connection to them because they are fellow Brightonians. So when Ce agreed to dye me a new colourway to celebrate our opening I was over the moon and here it is…
Fe₂O₃ is the chemical formula for iron oxide which sums up this colour perfectly. It’s a deep rusty delight full of depth and character. We have it in both BFL fingering (left) and Everyday Worsted (right) and it is an exclusive colour only available at YAK for now and I have been dreaming in patterns since it came in! Here are a few ideas at the top of my list.
Eastbound Sweater by Courtney Kelly was published earlier this year and is a lovely modern rendition of a fisherman’s gansey. Everyday Worsted has a wonderful stitch definition so would work really well for this pattern and there is something about the idea of having a fisherman jumper in the colour of a rusting boat that really tickles me.
If you’re not sure about all over rust and prefer your pops of colour in accessories only Elam would be another great pattern which would look lovely in the Everyday Worsted. The hat has a textured body and garter stitch brim and was designed by Dianna Walla. It would take just one skein of Everyday Worsted and looks like it would be nice quick knit.
The sun is shining here in Brighton. It’s still cold but the feeling of spring has sprung and when the clocks go forward next week I think there will be a definite shift the kinds of patterns which are going to be appealing. the ever popular Pebble Beach Shawlette by Helen Stewart was one of my favourite knitting projects and it worked so well with The Uncommon Thread BFL Fingering that I have to recommend it. My version is in pride of place in the window of YAK and I think it would look fabulous in Fe₂O₃. The shawl would take just one skein of the BFL.
Another great springy pattern, Lena Tee by Carrie Bostick Hoge. Just published this month this lovely light t-shirt pattern will give you that spring time feeling. The great thing about blue faced Leicester wool, especially in fingering weight, is that it doesn’t feel too woolly, it’s light and crisp so great for spring knits.
I don’t know about you but I just want to cast on right now. I don’t think I could ever have too much iron oxide in my life, except maybe on my bike…
