Stripes for the new season?
With Autumn around the corner its time to start thinking about what designs are going to shine in this next season. My prediction is… stripes! In experimental contrasting and complementing colours or strictly monochrome, knitted stripes are always a staple.
Over the past year I have witnessed an increasing amount of striped knitting patterns surface. I’m going to highlight some of my favourites and yarn suggestions I think would be well suited.
Sibling Sweater My Size – Laura Penrose
Starting strong with this beautiful all over stripes, drop shoulder sweater by Laura Penrose. The creative construction around the shoulders means the stripes never end! Laura’s Navy and cream version is very classic and extremely wearable. The suggested yarn is Sandnes Garn Merinoull and I agree that an oversized jumper like this in buttery soft yarn like Merinoull might be the cosiest combination! This pattern also has a children’s version, imagine matching Sibling Sweaters?!
Sailor Swift Top – Veronika Lindberg
Autumn tends to bring uncertain weather, this is where layering comes into play. If you’re looking to use up some of your summer yarn scraps, why not cast on this summer tank to layer under your chunky cardigans. With lots of yarn choices, this top can be made to suit your own layering needs. Choosing a yarn such as Pelini will give you a beautiful drape and breathable fabric. If you’re looking for something warmer, why not try this pattern knit in Ulysse .
Leith Cardigan – Rebecca Clow
Intarsia, stripes, double knit button band, v neck and multicolour! This super creative design has it all and looks like so much fun. With versions with chunky stripes, thin stripes, textured stripes using boucle the possibilities are endless. Even without the stripes this cardigan has a beautiful silhouette outlined by a double knit button band. I would love to see this cardigan in a mixture of Gilliatt colours, or with varying textures using Studio Donegal – Soft Donegal.
Structure Loop Sweater – Other Loops
Stripes don’t always have to be limited to just a colour change in stockinette stitch, in the structure loop sweater by Other Loops, the classic cream and navy stripes are made more interesting with a mix of purls, slip stitches and colour changes. The variation of the stripes over the jumper add a fluidity to an otherwise boxy fit. With a good amount of stockinette between the textured stripes this sweater would be a very enjoyable knit. A combination of De Rerum Natura’s Ulysse and Berenice would add a luxurious feel to this sweater design.
SHIMA Shawl – Beatrice Mase
If you’re keen to try some stripes but don’t want to commit to a sweater why not try a striped shawl. The SHIMA shawl is full of autumn energy, perfect to wrap up in as the days get cooler. Beatrice has used gorgeous warm neutrals in her version, but you could switch it up with some pastels or even a pop of bright colour. Jamieson & smith 2ply Jumper weight’s mix of shades could be a great choice to be able to mix up your choice of colours and pick the best shades! If this woolly yarn is a bit too rough for you, Edelweiss alpaca would also work beautifully, adding drape and softness to this stripey shawl.
Winona Polo Heavyweight Edition – Emily Y Chen
September brings the start of term for a lot of us. This oversized, chunky polo looks like the comfiest layer for those early starts. The uneven stripes on this polo give it a casual and laid back finish and the warm colours match the autumnal energy perfectly. I would love to see this knit up in various shades of Erica Knight Wool Local Aran, the muted pinks mixed with deeper greys would be beautiful!
