Winter headwear

I don’t know about you but I’ve seen a plethora of knitted winter headwear on my Instagram recently, and it’s given me itchy fingers. Headwear projects are nice and quick due to the size, and a necessity if you live in the Northern Hemisphere right now!

I love bonnets, balaclavas, beanies (and alliteration apparently..), so expect plenty of all that in this round up!

Grandmacore Hood by Veronika Lindberg

I love the vintage feel of the Grandmacore Hood. It’s slouchy fit coupled with the all-over lace pattern makes for such a fun statement accessory. It’ll keep your head and neck warm, but the open lace stitch will also stop you overheating if you’re doing your Christmas shopping and walking in and out of stuffy shops.

This would be a great project to try lace for the first time.

Try this in Alpakka Ull or Merinoull!

Balabonnet by Simone Bergh

What a beautiful piece! I love the idea of a simple outfit finished off a Balabonnet. It’s a large gauge so this could probably be knit over one or two evenings – perfect if you’re wanting to gift it to someone for Christmas.

The Balabonnet combines elements from both a bonnet and a balaclava, keeping your neck warm with the added touch of the large bow.

My Jose Hood by NORgard Knitters

I imagine this would be the cosiest, comfiest thing to wrap up in on a cold day. It’s versatile and can be worn with the hood up for a balaclava look, or the hood down for more of a scarf look.

If you don’t like anything too tight around your neck My Jose Hood is for you, it’s a loose, oversized look that would be very customisable due to the wraparound construction of it.

Try it in Erika Knight Wool Local Aran!

Blanket Stitch Beanie by MeganFaithMakes

Shameless plug here of my own pattern! The Blanket Stitch Beanie is a super simple, quick knit with a cute little blanket stitch trim that really elevates it. This is a good pattern for anyone new to hat knitting as it’s knit in aran weight (meaning it’ll work up quickly!) and the crown decreases are relatively easy to get your hand around.

I love Snefnug for this pattern.

Fat Fur Hat by Spektakelstrik

This photo is so tactile, I just want to reach through the screen and give it a squish! I imagine the Fat Fur Hat would be super warm around the ears from all those lovely layers of material. I feel like the amount of brushed mohair I’ve seen on Instagram over the last few years has been increasing. I absolutely love the look of mohair once it’s been brushed out – so light and fluffy.

Blomstra by Kajsa Vuorela Fredriksson

Here’s one for the colourwork lovers. Blomstra is definitely the most challenging in this round up, but nothing too crazy. A fun one to sink your teeth in to if you’re bored of stockinette.

What I love about colourwork patterns is the amount of different looks you can achieve simply from the colour combination. I must say I love the forest green combined with the oaty beige, it gives a lovely natural look. Equally you could make something bright and zingy to brighten up a gloomy day!

Ulysse would work well for this pattern.

Elli Bonnet by kisskiss.rhinestones

I love the crescent moon shape of the Elli Bonnet. It’s dainty and elegant whilst still adding some interest to your outfit and keeping your ears warm at the same time.

The Elli Bonnet uses two strands of lace weight, I think Midnatssol or Berenice would work wonderfully for this.

Until next time.. Happy Knitting!

  1. I love the blanket stitch beanie hat! Is it possible to get a hard copy of it please? Also how much is the Stefnug yarn?

    1. Hi Wendy,

Thank you! I’m afraid this pattern isn’t available as a hard copy, only a digital download currently. The Snefnug yarn is around the £9 mark, however we’re fully sold out now but there’s plenty of other UK shops that stock it!

      Best,
      Megan
